W.A. Porter Elementary

Jaimie Smith, Principal

Dear Porter Parents,

Happy New Year! It was so nice to see everyone back at school on January 3rd all rested and ready for the New Year. The semester is quickly coming to an end on Friday, January 18th. In addition, Monday, January 21st is a school holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The safety of our students, staff, and visitors is always on our minds and in our hearts. After 8:00 a.m., all doors except the front doors are locked. Volunteers and visitors are required to enter the building from the front doors, sign in at the office using thecomputer, and put on a visitor/volunteer sticker. Anyone seen without avisitor/volunteer sticker will be escorted back to the office. In addition, all classroom doors are locked throughout the day. I understand that safety rules can seem constricting at times, but the safety of our students, staff, and visitors is of utmost importance, and I appreciate your cooperation and support.

Since his arrival last year, Dr. Brown has continued to place an emphasis on school safety. In December a proposed bond was brought before the BISD School Board. While the School Board has not yet decided if a bond election will be called, a large portion of this bond proposal dealt directly with security upgrades for all campuses including W. A. Porter Elementary School. When more informationcomes out about this bond proposal, I highly encourage each of you to review the details of the proposed bond and decide for yourselves if this is somethingyou would like to support or not.

Our annual Spelling Bee was held on Friday, December 7th. Our Spelling Bee champ for the 2012-2013school year is Chandler Parr, 4th grade student. The runner-up is KyleSettelmaier, 4th grade student. Chandler will be participating inthe District Bee on Wednesday, February 27th. If for some reason Chandler cannot participate, Kyle will be ready to step in to represent W. A. Porter. We wish Chandler the best of luck!
