Welcome to ASL! This class consists of vocabulary, grammar, and culture. You will discover that ASL is similar to spoken Chinese rather than spoken English, and you will have hands-on activities to practice your signing skills. We are going to have a great year!
My Background...
I have been signing American Sign Language since I was five years old. I was a certified sign language interpreter (NAD) Level 3, and I have interpreted in almost every setting imaginable (Boeing Industries, Hewlett Packard, schools, churches, hospitals, court, etc.) since 1989. I graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics in 1991, and from The University of Texas at Arlington with my Ph.D. in Linguistics in 2008. I am a certified American Sign Language teacher, and a certified Spanish teacher (6-12), with over thirteen years of teaching experience between the university and high school settings.
I founded the first ASL program in BISD at Richland High School years ago, and then resigned to have my children. My husband and I have been married for 15 years, and we have three beautiful children ages 7, 9 and 11. When I decided to return to my career, for two years I taught as an Assistant Professor at Lamar University in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, where I trained ASL interpreters and taught future ASL teachers. In 2010, we relocated to the Fort Worth area and I was so excited to return to BISD! This is now my third year at BHS, and I am also teaching as Adjunct Faculty one night per week, in the graduate linguistics program at The University of Texas at Arlington.
I am looking forward to a great year at Birdville High School- go Hawks!!!
